No sugar, no worries

Added sugar may be the single most unhealthy aspect of the modern diet. If we took every item containing sugar out of your standard supermarket there would only be 20% of the products left on the shelves. Scary, we know!

For this reason, people have looked towards natural alternatives like Xylitol. It looks and tastes like sugar, but has fewer calories and doesn’t raise blood sugar levels.

It is essentially known as a sugar alcohol, but do not fear the alcohol part, it is not the same alcohol that people get drunk from, so our ice cream is safe.

It has a similar sweetness to regular sugar, but contains 40% fewer calories. Table sugar has 4 calories per gram whereas Xylitol has 2.4 calories per gram. Quite a margin.

Xylitol is found in small amounts in many fruits and vegetables and is therefore considered natural. Humans even produce small amounts of it via normal metabolic processes. It is a common ingredient in sugar free chewing gums, candies, mints, diabetes friendly foods, oral care products and in our case ice-cream. Several studies suggest that it can improve dental health too. Do we have a deal yet?

Bottom line: Xylitol is one of the best alternatives to sugar on the market for individuals with a healthy lifestyle in mind.
